The Art of Art

Phil McNally
Art Piece and a subjective art piece

For a long time, I have been involved in art, but it's only been in recent years that I've made a concerted effort to truly comprehend it. Not so much from a historical perspective, but more from a practical standpoint. I firmly believe that art is highly subjective, with beauty being perceived differently by each individual.

This fact makes pursuing any level of artistry a daunting tightrope walk.

If you don't value or require the opinions of others, then this blog is essentially finished. However, if your goal is to create art that resonates beyond yourself and captivates viewers in a way that they can't escape, then this presents a significant challenge for some artists and is a straightforward decision for others.

The Subject of Subjective

The term "subjective" is where I encounter the most difficulty. Throughout my life, I've encountered art that has left me awestruck as well as puzzled where others are amazed.

I'm unable to decipher it.

Reflecting on a recent podcast I had featuring Christa Coultier, she introduced a more realistic perspective. She highlighted that there are talented artists who go unrecognized and subpar ones who receive significant acclaim.

Why is that? According to her, some excel at marketing their work, while others do not.

This piece of art sold for $120,000

So is a banana taped to a wall a work of art or just the qualities of duct tape. Sorry, can't answer that one. But I do love duct tape and I do like bananas.
